About the game
The Great Paper Expansion is a free idle game you play in your browser, on a phone, tablet or computer, with no download. It started with one question: how many times would you have to fold a sheet of paper to reach the Moon? The answer is only 42, and the game grew out of how surprising that is.
What the game is
You start with a single sheet of paper, about 0.1 mm thick. You make more paper, build mills that make it for you, and fold. Every fold doubles the stack, so it grows slowly at first and then faster than you'd ever guess: taller than a house, then Mount Everest, then past the edge of space, the Moon, the Sun, the stars and other galaxies, all the way to the edge of the observable universe at fold 102.
It's an idle game (also called an incremental game): it keeps making progress while you're away, and you come back to spend what you earned. You can play for a minute at a time or for an evening. The How to play page explains the basics, and the Game guide covers World 1 in depth.
Real facts at every landmark
Every landmark you pass is a real thing with its real height or distance: a house cat, the Eiffel Tower, Mount Everest, the International Space Station, the Moon, nearby stars, the Andromeda Galaxy. Each one comes with a short fact you can read in the game, and the number of folds needed to pass it is worked out from the real size of the landmark and the real thickness of paper. It's a game you can actually learn from, made for curious people of any age. If you want the science behind folding itself, start with How many times can you fold a piece of paper?
Two worlds
World 1, The Paper World, is the folding climb described above. Late in World 1 there's also the Crease Pattern Studio, an origami mini-game where you trace the real crease patterns of classic origami bases.
World 2, The Grove, opened on October 25, 2026 for everyone who reaches the edge of the universe. It goes back to where paper comes from: a forest. You hire a crew, plant and fell trees, build lumber camps and fill paper mill orders, and as your Grove grows it makes your World 1 climb stronger too. Each world has its own save, kept in the cloud so you can carry on from another device.
Who makes it
The Great Paper Expansion is made by one person, a solo developer who goes by PaperBoy and designed the game: the idea, the worlds, the systems and the balancing. PaperBoy plays it too, so keep an eye out on the leaderboard for a name with a DEV badge. If you climb past it, you're officially folding faster than the person who made the game. The game went live on October 10, 2026, and has been updated almost every day since. Every change is listed on the Updates page, and the Stats page shows live numbers from every player in both worlds, from folds and taps to trees felled and rare finds.
Player ideas shape what comes next. Polls in the game ask players what they'd like, and bug reports and suggestions sent through Settings → Feedback & bugs are read one by one.
AI disclosure
The game is designed by PaperBoy and built with the help of AI tools, which assist with things like code, art and writing. Every part is directed, tested and tuned by PaperBoy.
Free to play, fair to play
The game is free, with nothing you have to buy to finish it. An optional Store sells cosmetics for anyone who wants to support the game, and optional short ad breaks can give a boost. The game asks for no personal details to play: a guest account is made for you, and signing in with an email is only needed to keep your save safe across devices. The Privacy policy explains exactly what is stored.
What's next
More of the Grove, more landmarks and secrets, and more worlds are planned. Questions not answered here are probably in the FAQ, and you can always get in touch.
